Walking the Abbotts Lagoon Trail

A short, no-effort walk showcases Point Reyes' beauty

If you're looking for a casual walk in the Point Reyes area, the Abbotts Lagoon Trail is a flat, one-hour jaunt (3 mi) that takes you near— but not over— rolling hills right to the water's edge.

If California isn't feeling particularly dry, these hills are covered with wildflowers and Teletubbies-esque greenery for miles. A good portion of the trail runs adjacent to the nearby Historic H Ranch where cattle graze peacefully— watching them meander around eating grass and drinking water was surprisingly captivating.

The trail itself is a combination of gravel path and boardwalk with ample benches scattered along the route. It terminates at the ocean after crossing a small wooden bridge that provides a view of the lagoon in both directions. The ocean front includes stretches of sandy beaches— when we went, many people were bringing out picnic blankets, umbrellas, and even equipment for a small birthday party. It seemed like a great place to spend a sunny weekend afternoon.

If you only have one day to spend in Point Reyes and this is your first visit, I wouldn't recommend it as a standout highlight. But this trail is one of the least strenuous options the area offers and can be a great way to stretch your legs without breaking a sweat. Do note that the path can be popular; the parking lot was full when we visited, although turnover is relatively quick.
